We don't Walk

Inspired by another great blog I read today I'm going to document some of the great things I learnt this year...

1. Planes really aren't all that bad. Big ones that is. Big jets that can sit at way up in the air and you don't feel a thing. Found this fact out when I made my first overseas trip to Thailand in August. Had such a great time and also realised that international travel is easy. (Little planes still suck.)

2. I love Australian music more than ever. Have been to see a few aussie bands this year (namely Cog) but just hearing tonnes of stuff on triple J highlights that you could go a whole week and hear brilliant musicians writing, creating and distributing great music.

3. Pineapple is one great fruit. Thanks to thai pineapples for helping me discover the fact i really like them (both fresh & cooked lol.)

4. The best thing I did this year was give up dairy! Feeling over 100% better. Whilst slipping up occasionally on ice cream, brie & camenbert at parties, or butter on toast, the non-dairy diet is definately staying on for the long haul.

5. I quit my job and it wasn't scary. The prospect of being unemployed is scary, although hopefully won't be around for long. Being free and rid of possessions can be quite liberating.

6. All of my friends & family are so brilliant. They give me so much inspiration. They're all over the country, the world, getting married, doing amazing things. But i love the fact we can communicate in a message, an email, a call and they are always there - no matter what.

7. Music is moving, growing, progressing. It just keeps me going - the chance to listen to new things, write about new music and most of all sharing tunes with the people i love.

8. And i really do think that 2007 is going to be the best year of my life.

thanks to www.myspace.com/auslive for the inspiration for this blog. xx

Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.

Cool lyrics which you might find interesting today,
tommorow or sometime.
Leave me out with the waste
This is not what I do
It's the wrong kind of place
To be thinking of you
It's the wrong time
For somebody new
It's a small crime
And I've got no excuse
- Damien Rice, 9 Crimes

He could've played guitar better than Hendrix
He could've told the future
He could've baked the most delicious cake in the world
He could've scored more goals than Wayne Gretzky
He could've danced better than Barishnikov
Jesus could have been funnier than any comedian you can think of
Jesus was way cool

He told people to eat his body and drink his blood
That's so cool
Jesus was so cool
But then some people got jealous of how cool he was
So they killed him
But then he rose from the dead
He rose from the dead, danced around
Then went up to heavenI mean,
that's so cool
Jesus was way cool
No wonder there are so many Christians
- King Missile - Jesus was way cool

10 reasons why i hate The Killers

1. the suck big time

2. the songs make no sense. Example “Now she’s smoking a cab, and she’s doing her hair, and I’m getting quite bored, rather wrestle a bear...”, or “Somebody Told Me, You had a boyfriend, looked like a ladyboy, I write like a schoolboy...” and so on.

3. If the Rolling Stones hate them that is worth gold Review - "Why, Killers? Why? It's the oldest story in the New Wave book: (1) Boys get famous wearing makeup and acting tarty to impress girls; (2) Boys wash off makeup and act sincere to impress boys; (3) It never works. Loads of the original New Wave bands fell into this trap, the Killers take themselves too seriously'.

4. they are mormons. Now don't read this as some crazy anti-religious plot, because i have nothing against any other mormon. just The Killers. obviously part of the reason they are so crap is because unlike all other excess lovin' rock n rollers', they just have not had enough sex or drugs, or both in large doses. And look how important that is in music making.

5. chances are that if you hate alternative rock bands with heavy use of the synthesizer, you're probably going to hate The Killers. As PopMatters.com put it: Some might be a tad uncomfortable with the prominence of the synths and Flowers' rather theatrical delivery. Tad uncomfortable!? makes me feel positively ill.

6. Lead singer Brandon Flowers refers to the Sam's Town one of the best albums of the past 20 years. Wanker. Enough said.

7. .Flowers has recently gone on record claiming that Green Day's politically driven concept album American Idiot displays "calculated Anti-Americanism." He explained that he has problems with the album content itself and also the fact that the band's recent live DVD, Bullet in a Bible, was filmed overseas. Stating that he feels Green Day's DVD is a bit of a stunt, he went on to say that he feels The Killers' most recent release, Sam's Town, is a much more accurate representation of American culture. What the?

8. the Lead singers name is Brandon Flowers. How more pouncey and Las Vegas do they wanna get.

9. The song Bones: "Don’t you wanna come with me? Don’t you wanna feel my bones on your bones? It’s only natural Don’t you wanna swim with me"? They sardistic freaks.

10. they just suck big time.

"It is impossible to defeat an ignorant man in argument."- William Gibbs McAdoo (1863-1941)

last day of Aussie music month

In tribute to a brilliant Aus Music Month on Triple J, which ends today.. here we go through some of the newish and just awesome Aussie acts.

1. Something with Numbers - new, fresh, maybe emo, maybe bad live, who even knows. Who even cares? hmm well i like the sound of Apple of the Eye, the first sort of commercial single. See if they will prove themselves over the next few months.

2. The Cops - Argghhh. Can't get enough of these guys. So pop and rock and indie and dancey all rolled into one giant grape of coolness. If you haven't heard them go back under the rock.

3. TZU - Wait till we see these guys live. Just going to go absolutely sick. I have heard good reports. Everything they touch turns into gold. Well not really gold in terms of record sales, but just sheer brilliant hip/hop, jazz funky beats to dance too. Catchy ass tunes you want to sing all summer long. Buy the singles, buy the albums, just got and buy the Cat Empire-Hilltop Hoods mashed up love children doing their thing.

Other really notable mentions as i couldn't be arsed to write anymore. Little Birdy & the Red Riders putting out some awesome material this year. New electronica which i guess had been massive on my stereo this year Goyte, Midnight Juggernuts, Hook N Sling, The Presets,Kid Kenobi, Soma Rasa all worth seeing live and have mad albums. On the blues and roots front sort of a bit quietish but lovin Custom Kings, John Bulter Trio, Juzzie Smith. Big prediction for the newish TZU band of next year would be True Live who just have a good sound. Well hip hop just so many to mention. Happy days for all things Hip Hop, think Muph & Platonic, Macromantics. Others i want to hear heaps more of - Offcuts and Dukes of Windsor.

Massive lame awards go to Something for Kate, Eskimo Joe, Josh Pyke, Bob Evans, Darren Hanlon. Sorry if your a fan and your reading this but it's my blog so i can think i write what i want too. Comment if you want. lol.

Dutch abstract rock ... Kashmir once were apparently a bunch of art obsessed manikins; playing around in Copenhagen with different media, such as graphics, street art, absurd poetry and of course music; then they found their means of communication, forming a rock 'n' roll band. “The easiest way to get heard was to plug whatever instrument into a guitar amplifier and turn it up ‘till somebody either listened or left. You couldn’t quite get the same attention from painting a picture or reciting a poem”, Kasper, the lead vocalist recalls. Loving the track The Cynic - which features a duet with David Bowie. Their official site is www.kashmir.dk

Lovin' these tracks today:
1. Plump Dj's - Summertime
2. AFI - Love like Winter
3. Tool - The Pot

New Music November

Cassius - French Electronica/House/Pop
Cassius, comprises two kings of the French Electronic scene: After Initially recording for Mo' Wax as La Funk Mob, producing classic albums for France's only successful Hip Hop export MC Solaar and - for Zdar - forming the pioneering French House outfit Motorbass with Etienne De Crecy, Cassius officially formed in 1998 as ‘two friends making music for living better.' Key tracks: Feeling for You, The Sound Of Violence (Feel Like I Wanna Be Inside you), Toop Toop.

Klaxons -
Screamo / Happy Hardcore / Pop
One blogger says Klaxons seem to be spearheading a neo-rave movement of sorts. I think indie-rave: like boys in tight jeans with perky synths and guitars. Actually, it all seems more art rock than rave similar TV on the Radio + Yeah Yeah Yeahs + Bloc Party + The Cops + The Rapture.
Nice tracks - Gravity's Rainbow, Atlantis to Interzone

MSTRKRFT - Electronica/Club/House
MSTRKRFT (read as "Masterkraft") is an electronic music group who specialise in from Canada who specialise in REMIXING anything. The group was started in 2005 by Jesse F. Keeler formerly of Death from Above 1979 and Al Puodziukas) formerly of the Mississauga electropop group Girlsareshort. Al-P was also the producer for Death from Above 1979's debut album You're a Woman, I'm a Machine. Notable tracks - Wolfmother - Woman, BLOC PARTY - LUNO COVER + TWO MORE YEARS REMIX.

True Live - Hip Hop / Jazz / Classical
Melbourne based TRUE LIVE are a unique ensemble that cross boundaries of genre and style while engaging audiences with songs of passion and meaning. With performances and recordings consisting of a three-piece string section (cello, violin, double bass), percussion, keyboards and vocals, the group create a contemporary, organic sound. Drawing on the sounds and performance ideals of Hip Hop and Jungle, they are the new Cat Empire & TZU mashed together. Tracks to look for TV, Question This.

The Cops - Rock/ Funk / Electronica
Four peice Aussie band from Sydney describe their influences from Vanilla Ice, to Primal Scream and Beck. Head bopping and damn catchy tunes, the Cops use electronica nicely to balance nifty rock riffs. Singable tunes - Call me Anytime, Wallet - Puffer-Smokes-Keys.

getting some nice Cog-gige ; )

so one goes to www.google.com.au, click on images section. type in "Cog", click search. What the fark do you get??? See following:
BAD Google! for once you are wrong, wrong, just plain wrong. watch that search engine it is getting evil. Bondi trio Cog have spent the last 3 years building a strong and dedicated fan-base by getting in the van and vigorously touring their arses off. If you havn't heard of them, you are a total loser and need to think about getting a life. But seriously, this band is phenomenal. Their live show is an experience not to be missed and their talent and presence on stage is undeniable! And with Lucius on the throne (arguably one of Australia's best drummers & best looking men in in this country) this band is a must see live. Going to see them tonight at the PLantation Hotel - Coffs Harbour, so review tommorow. Supports - Sunk loto (scary thought).

what the heck is emo??

Many people have asked this question in the past few months. Thanks to Wikipedia here is a crash course:

Emo is a subgenre of hardcore punk music. Since its inception, emo has come to describe several independent variations, linked loosely but with common ancestry. As such, use of the term has been the subject of much debate. In its original incarnation, the term emo was used to describe the music of the mid-1980s Washington, DC scene and its associated bands. In later years, the term emocore, short for "emotional hardcore", was also used to describe the DC scene and some of the regional scenes that spawned from it.

THE STYLE:
Hair: often a bit crusty Glasses: Horn-rim ONLY (cat-eyes are also acceptable for the women) Facial Hair: Stubble Piercings: Optional Necklaces: Beads, etc. (mandatory) Shirt: Old t-shirts, dress shirts etc. Sweater: No!no!no! a sweaterVEST. (old) Jacket: Old, op shop shop gear as with all the above. Pants: Dress pants / corduroy. Socks: White Shoes: Black dress shoes "The color palate? Browns, blacks, dark blues etc.

A brief list of "emo" bands : FUGAZI EMBRACE RITES OF SPRING JAWBOX BLUETIP FRODUS TEXAS IS THE REASON PROMISE RING NONE LEFT STANDING MINERAL MAXIMILLIAN COLBY J AWBREAKER My Chemical Romance Panic! At the Disco

Describe EMO as: "Mature" music made by cigarette-puffing ex-straightedgers.
Heavy on soul-searching, hard to mosh to. Emo's like sharing on Myspace, wearing eyeliner, crying and killing themselves.

EMO JOKES- read at your own risk. No offense to the Emo's. Yeah for anyone whom dosen't get it you will now...

How many emos does it take to microwave a burrito?
Four. One to cry about it on LiveJournal. One to make a Myspace about it. One to take a picture of them taking a picture of themselves in a mirror and post it on LiveJournal and MySpace. The other to make the burrito.

I wish my lawn was emo... so it would cut itself.

How do you stop an emo from drowning?
Tell him to write a song about it.

Did you hear about the new Sesame Street toy? Tickle Me Emo... Tickle him and he runs away to a dark corner and cries and writes poetry.

What do you say when 1,000 emo's are running through town?
The cliff is that way.

i love you more than an emo kid loves razorblades.

gigs

Percussion Junction is a four piece that mixes traditional percussion and drums with modern beats that range from global to breaks, hip-hop and funk to house and electro. They played last night in Armidale as part of the Amnesty International Freedom Festival. A reviewer discribes then as an "infectious tribal blend of electro house and funky break beat."
They went off, awesome set with drums all over the place. very impressive percussion with a mass energy level.

Formed in 1992, Koolism comprises of a world-class DJ (apprently a regular judge for all the major DJ competitions) and an equally as impressive MC, KOOLISM is the "visionary collaboration" between DJ DanielSan and MC Hau - and they make an exceptional duo.

"Koolism is the standard-bearer of Australian hip-hop. Though it can throw down the funk live like the Roots, Koolism's strength is that it sounds like a hot summer's breeze, with nimble, laid-back rhymes and dub-heavy beats"- NEW YORK TIMES January 2003
Hot damn that was some nice scratching going on there. DanielSan was on fire. just awesome stuff. if you get the chance go see them live, some fun, funky and fresh hip hop.

it's Monday and im struggling...

Alcohol is the anesthesia by which we endure the operation of life. - George Bernard Shaw

we saw a band/dj/combination of the sort on Saturday night. Hmm quite strange. i think they really should look into becoming stand up comedians. i didn't get the ramblings about carbon minoxide and trees and cars.

Koolism on Wednesday night. Looking forward to seeing them live.

If you don't do anything today listen to:
The Rapture - Pieces of the People We Love
Spoon - Stay don't go.

I tried to drown my sorrows, but the bastards learned how to swim, and now I am overwhelmed by this decent and good feeling. - Frida Kahlo

BIG DAY OUT LineUP

Tool
Jet
Muse
Violent Femmes
The Killers
Scribe
Spank Rock
Peaches
My Chemical Romance
Eskimo Joe
The Herd
The Sleepy Jackson
The Spazzys

to steal some great words from the keys of whiteboy on the dancefloor, the line_up for this year's BDO (or next Year) is pretty much shite. You'll get to see Muse & Tool & Peaches for all of half an hour, which hey is totally brilliant considering getting a ticket to one of thier gigs individually would be farking hard right now. But WTF on the others, I'm quite sure I don't want to spend the day fighting off hordes of teeny boppers (Eskimo Joe), Emo's (My Chemical Romance) and general idiots (anyone who think the Killers can actually make original music). To buy a ticket or not too buy a ticket? hmm well if they announce Good Charlotte or Panic at the Disco in the 2nd round you can at least sell it on ebay.

What are you doing this Saturday???

Triple J will bring you the IMPOSSIBLE MUSIC FESTIVAL. For a full line-up see http://www.triplej.net.au. My picks:

Freeform 5 & Krafty Kuts

Uk DJ's hitting tiny country towns. Interesting scenario! I bet they thought so too.

Freeform 5 describe themselves as "It's like one part Prince, mixed with one part Kraftwerk and one part Blondie, throw it in the acid house party blender with a healthy measure of sex and you get Freeform Five". Pretty good description i should think. Only a DJ set, but apparently they went off at Sydney's Parklife with a full piece band mixing the set. Impressive blend of electro, breaks and random bass mash up remixes of a few new pop (namely Justin Timberlake) songs.

Krafty Kuts is one of the worlds most sort after and respected dj / producers in dance music, he recently picked up the trophy for 'Best DJ at the Breakspoll 2005' awards for the second year running and will be releasing his debut solo artist album Freakshow this year. The album features collaborations with a host of hot talent including Dynamite MC, Tim Deluxe, Ashley Slater, Dr Luke, Theo, Bespoke, Ed Solo and Chris Sargent. The gig was stylish, touched on hip hop and breaks with a lot of bits in between. From fun loving funk to bassline breaks Krafty Kuts is one experienced dj.

Musician Religon

Religious music (also sacred music) is music performed or composed for religious use or through religious influence. lot of music has been composed to complement religion, and many composers have derived some inspiration from their religions. Many forms of traditional music have been adapted to fit religions' purposes or descended from religious music. But how is modern day Pop/Rock/Hip-Hop influenced by religion and is it really reflected in music or meanings of music??? Or does it make you want to love or hate a band? or do you even care what religion your favourite musician worships?

~Byron Bay ~

Big up to the bands in Byron on the weekened.

First up one-man-band, Juzzie Smith aka the Harmonica Man, played at the Byron Markets. Nice sound, mixing some indian influences with Xavier Rudd cruisy beach slide guitar.

Some band at the Great Northern on Sunday Night - lets just call them Wizards of...
didn't catch the rest of it. But the lead singer could have well been an ex-criminal, so Wizards of Ex-criminals. Awesome blues n roots cross rock stuff.
